Own Your AFib

Take back control of your health and your life

“If you’ve ever felt that doctors don’t have enough time in clinic to fully explain AFib and its many treatment options, then you’re not alone. I’m Dr Deborah Lockwood and I recently left clinical practice as a cardiologist and heart rhythm specialist at a prestigious heart rhythm institute to pursue other dreams. When I was in practice, cardiologists from around the country used to refer patients with atrial fibrillation to me for help with their management.  It always seemed ridiculous that in the space of less than 40 minutes, we were supposed to assess the patient and provide comprehensive information sufficient to help them decide what they wanted to do next. I used to schedule my new AFib patients for the last clinic appointment of the day and then stay for up to 2 hours after my clinic staff had gone home, in order to explain everything to my patients and to my satisfaction and come up with a treatment plan that we both agreed on.  Wouldn’t you like some of that information at your fingertips and to have your questions answered?”

Deborah Lockwood attended medical school at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, qualifying as a doctor (MB, BCh, MA) in 1987. She then completed her training in the United Kingdom achieving dual certification of specialist training in general internal medicine and cardiology in 2000. Her UK training included a 2 year British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship at St Georges Hospital in London, specialist registrar training in Cardiology based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and an EP fellowship at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. Dr. Lockwood then came to the United States to participate in a further 2 year electrophysiology fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Here her interest in complex catheter ablation resulted in her decision to remain in the United States and she work for 18 years on the faculty at the OU Heart Rhythm Institute, Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, during which time she became board certified in General Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine (American Board of Internal Medicine). She gained experience in both management and procedures for a wide range of complex heart rhythm disorders, with specialist interest in atrial fibrillation. She established herself as an expert to whom general cardiologists and other heart rhythm specialists both from Oklahoma and from other states referred patients whose arrhythmia problems could not easily be solved locally. She was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in 2009 and received permanent US residency (“Green Card”) on the basis of an EB-1 conversion (awarded to outstanding professors). She is currently a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart association and is a Certified Cardiac Device specialist. She has been an elected member of the Faculty Senate of the OU Health Sciences and has been on the Faculty Advisory Council to the State Regents for Higher Education, including a period as elected Chairperson of both of these groups. Dr Lockwood has lectured at many venues around the United States on various topics within the field of cardiac arrhythmias and has authored or co-authored multiple chapters and articles, including a chapter on AV nodal reentrant tachycardia in the bestselling text book “Cardiac Electrophysiology: From Cell to Bedside. Eds. Zipes and Jalife”. She is an abstract reviewer for the Heart Rhythm Society and has represented the Heart Rhythm Society as a reviewer for the European Society of Cardiology (ESC): Focused update for the joint European consensus document on AF/PCI. She is a reviewer for The American Journal of Cardiology and for the Heart Rhythm Journal and the Journal of Atrial fibrillation and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiology and Diagnostics Research and the Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases and Cardiac Surgery. She has also been invited as an expert reviewer for the CDC, US and for the Medical Research Council, UK. More recently she trained as a Life Coach, with the Brave Thinking Institute (the worlds premier transformation coaching training program) and now devotes herself to helping others achieve their full potential.
